PROJECT STORY
The First Shadow
The desert is not stopped by a green line. It is negotiated through wind, scarce water, and time. The First Shadow imagines a rammed-earth territorial infrastructure that captures sand, slows runoff, and makes a habitable climate before it makes a building.
Three parallel walls cross a fictionalised transect of the Sahel. Between them, half-moon catchments, channels, stone, and dispersed planting transform the ground through accumulation rather than spectacle. The museum is a thickening of the central wall: a seed archive, soil observatory, workshop, nursery, and thermal refuge. Ribbed roofs collect nocturnal condensation and direct it toward buried cisterns.
The architecture accepts erosion. Every repair remains legible, and damaged bays can be rebuilt with local earth. The series combines territorial landscape, dust storm, cultural interior, water infrastructure, and maintenance work. It is a study in visualization for climate projects, landscape restoration, and architectural competitions in extreme environments.
The African Union Great Green Wall initiative is a contextual reference. The site shown is a fictionalized Sahel transect. Independent concept by NoName Architecture; imagery by JVA Renders.
Architectural context and authorship
The Great Green Wall is an African land-restoration initiative, rather than a building or a single architectural competition. The First Shadow works with a fictional Sahel transect: earth, shade and water bring visual research down to the scale of everyday maintenance. Context source: UNCCD.
