The Observatory of Weather

At the base of Danjiang Bridge, The Observatory of Weather proposes a black-concrete control centre and public observatory. The building remains low and heavy so that it never competes with the structural silhouette of Zaha Hadid Architects’ bridge; its role is to measure the estuary and provide a place from which to experience it.

A shallow sheet of water on the roof operates as a weather instrument. Rain changes its surface, wind displaces it, and evaporation leaves salt deposits. Inside, operational control and the public route are separated through thickness, level changes, and controlled views rather than a generic transparent façade.

The sequence moves through calm conditions, an approaching storm, zero visibility, technical lockdown, and the return of the horizon. Architecture never becomes scenery: eroded concrete, salt-filled joints, storm gates, and maintenance light explain how the building endures. The project is conceived as a visualization study for bridges, coastal infrastructure, and competitions in which weather is part of the design brief.
