The Inhabited Cliff: architecture carved into Trojena

The Inhabited Cliff is an independent conceptual proposal by NoName Architecture for the landscape of Trojena, NEOM. Rather than placing a recognisable object on the mountain, it brings hospitality into the canyon section. JVA Renders developed the art direction and architectural imagery for this hypothesis, conceived as a study of rock, cold, and shelter.

Three horizontal incisions hold guest rooms, communal spaces, and protected circulation. Roughly seventy per cent of the programme sits within the rock. From a distance, the terraces continue the natural strata; closer in, lines of light and construction joints reveal inhabitable infrastructure.

The project is read through changing temperatures and materials. Stone retains the cold, while timber and 2700 K light make the interior visible through snow. A narrow outdoor pool acts as a fissure between architecture and landscape: steam reveals the frozen air and measures the space against the human body.

The visual sequence begins at the scale of the vast white territory and moves towards excavation, thresholds, the long communal room, and a single guest room. Telephoto framing compresses the slopes, while a closer camera brings back texture to glass, stone, and frost. Each frame adds a different condition of place, use, or weather.

A bridge exposed to wind and a view after a snowstorm place the intervention in an active landscape. The final image holds the resort’s warm light as the exterior nearly disappears. Architecture becomes legible through the small portion of mountain that it makes inhabitable.

This architectural visualisation study shows how a mountain resort and complex destination can be presented for private hospitality competitions through a narrative of experience, construction, weather, and landscape.
